I live in houston and have a phd. This is a serious question and do not need people to post links to hotjobs or monster or sites like that.

What you need is about $10 million in investment capital to put into their pot. Seriously, that is partially true. But the question is, what do you bring to the party? Usually, VC firms like experienced business executive level guys/gals with experience turning around failing companies or ability to grow small companies into big ones fast and profitably. If I were you, I would look up some CV firms in Houston and DON’T send them a resume. Instead call them and tell the person who answers the phone you are looking for a career and would like to talk to someone in their firm, not as an applicant, but to get more info about what types of jobs are available and what they look for.

Getting a job with a VC firm is difficult. It is a highly coveted job that attracts a lot of very talented applicants. The two principal routes into VC positions are an MBA from a top tier business school (Harvard, Stanford, Northwestern, etc.) or a strong track record rising to senior executive positions with successful companies (preferably CEO of a start-up). A few people can make it in with MD, PhD or JD degrees and the right experience but they are exceptions. You say you have a PhD. That is good from the education side particularly if its in a technical area and from a top school. A PhD in philosophy or history is probably worthless. To augment that, you would typically need either an MBA or strong management experience. Try to find an organization that promotes entrepreneurship (a local university is a good place to check). They may have conferences and seminars where you can meet some local VCs. Even with the right background, you will likely need to network to find an opportunity.
