scriptorcarmina asked: My husband’s and my wardrobes are very shabby, and I just got a new, high-paying job. We’re pretty much going to start over from scratch, but can I get a list of things I should buy at Von Maur as opposed to K-mart?

Good shoes, belts, handbags, and suits. All must be the best you can afford. You can skim a little on blouses, sweater sets, shirts, ties, and underwear. A really good suit for both sexes will last a long time, with care, and should never be trendy only classic. Shop at a place were they have knowledgeable help.

i prefer K Mart. you can have 2 pairs of black pants, skirt and a blazer/coat and i suggest try to invest in blouses. As long as you know how to mix and match with your wardrobes.

You needn’t think in terms of cost extremes. Style must be combined with FABRIC. Any garment made out of cheap fabric will look cheap. A modest priced suit in a flattering color for the man will do just fine. Banker stripes are always good. A couple of dress shirts with a nice assortment of ties works. Want to look really sharp? Take the trousers to a dry cleaners with a tailor and add suspender buttons, and use them. NO CLIP-ONS! Finally, the only area to spend a bit of money is shoes. The more expensive shoes will have both style and comfort. A nice pinky ring is okay.
For the lady, a few business type skirts with blouses and/or jackets will suffice. Even with great legs, too short in length is a no-no, as is plunging necklines. No real high heals, stick to low to mediums that are comfortable. No big hoop earrings, or flashy diamonds. Leave the pearls for evenings. Good selection of waste belts make the blouse and skirt work together. Limit the amount of wrist jewelry.
For both: Clean and trimmed nails. Men, get them manicured, clear coat is okay (if it’s okay for the Marine drill team, it’s okay for the rest of us). Ladies, no artwork on the nails. Leave that to the manicurist.
